THE FIFTH DOMAIN
DEFENDING OUR COUNTRY, OUR COMPANIES, and OURSELVES in the AGE of CYBER THREATS
By Richard A. Clarke and Robert K. Knake
Richard A. Clarke and Robert K. Knake are considered to be some of America’s top cybersecurity experts and in THE FIFTH DOMAIN they show us exactly why. These two seasoned practitioners provide a perspective that only experts of their caliber could to a much younger and less experienced professional like myself.
This book has received praises from those much more qualified than myself including former POTUS Bill Clinton, former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, and the current director of the Domestic Policy Council, Susan Rice. I discovered this work via Paul Jerimy’s website, which is an incredibly helpful resource with its certification roadmap. I still try to stay updated to his page for any reviews or additional information I can find.
While topics covered include practical ways our nation can collectively and individuality empower ourselves in the cyber domain, it covers a contemporary historical overview of cybersecurity, information technology, our nation’s responses (Both good and bad), it covers much more and has expanded the scope and understanding of the cyber domain for me. Additional topics Include famous attacks like Stuxnet, Petya, NotPetya (In Eddie Bravo voice “Look into it”), and Wannacry, the cloud, ICS/SCADA, AI, 5g/IoT, and through other attacks. Our authors essentially take us on a journey from the White House to Fortune 500 boardrooms, the origins of the Cyber Kill Chain and MITRE ATT&CK to the front of the quantum race, the Grateful Dead to the separation of the web and state, Across the world with Digital Schengen Accords and most importantly from problems to proposed solutions.
While the battle between public and private responsibility may still be ongoing, this book puts power in the readers hands as Americans and as human beings. 10/10 Would recommend for anyone interested in bettering “cyberspace” or “meatspace” for that matter. Especially if you need a brief catch up on what has happened and where to go from here.
Thanks for reading.
